New Partnership Between the Library and the Law

The Kenton County Public Library has partnered with the Kenton County Law Library to make an expensive law database available for free to the public. The database Westlaw PRO will become available on Thursday, May 1, which is also Law Day, USA. They can be accessed at any Kenton County Public Library location – Covington, Erlanger and Durr in Independence – during library hours.

National and local laws and legal forms are now available free of charge through Westlaw PRO. While the databases are useful for attorneys, there are many facets of them that are helpful to the general public. Tenant/landlord rights, living wills, power of attorney, contracts, and more can now be accessed at the library using a free library card.

Kenton County Law Library Trustees, Garry Edmondson, Greta Hoffman, and Alma Puissegur, encouraged by Judge Patricia Summe, decided to look outside the four walls of the Law Library to provide free capabilities for self-directed legal research.  Library director Dave Schroeder was also looking for a way to provide these services for Library users. He explains:

“There is a law stating that each county is required to have legal resources available for the public. We knew that the county now offered these databases at the Covington courthouse but since the Library is open more hours than the courthouse, and has more locations, it makes sense to offer it at our facilities. This way the public has more outlets and time in which they can research.”

The Kenton County Public Library is the only library, other than Boyd, to offer this service. Mr. Schroeder is pleased that the Library can offer this free service.

“It’s a win-win for everyone. The county attorney’s office now has more outlets for the public to review law databases, the Library receives these databases as part of the partnership and the public has more options and time to access these useful resources.”
